Todo era alegría, ese día en el Club Argentino por una noche convocante para una velada boxística. Lejos de pensar en una catástrofe, la entidad venía de celebrar el 10 de enero del mismo año, cuatro meses antes del hecho, la iluminación eléctrica de su campo de juego, constituyéndose en la primera institución del interior provincial, en contar con esa mejora.
Solo se hablaba de progreso, triunfos, crecimiento institucional…hasta ese 10 de mayo en el que todo se interrumpió, costándole muchísimos años poder superar lo fatídico, lo inimaginable.
El hecho adquirió notoriedad nacional, al punto que días después, el club River Plate (también Talleres, Rosario Central y Racing, entre otros) ofreció su plantel para realizar un partido a beneficio de los familiares de las víctimas.
La lluviosa noche de otoño, aprovechando la gran concentración popular, más una improvisada lona tendida sobre lugares inadecuados, hicieron un verdadero cóctel de la muerte.
Peritajes de la época determinaron que la viga de cemento que atravesaba la pared y que servía de sostén del toldo desplegado para evitar la lluvia, fue la causante de la terrible tragedia.
En medio de la velada boxística, la viga cayó aplastando a más de 40 personas y al arrastrar a la pared (de 7 mts. de altura y de 30 cms. de espesor) ésta también se depositó con furia sobre un número no precisado de espectadores. La gente, deseosa de escapar del infierno en busca de un lugar seguro, ante la oscuridad reinante y gritos de dolor, agravó la situación al pisotear sin querer algunos de los cuerpos caídos.
Un total de 37 víctimas fatales arrojó el lamentable hecho. Bell Ville lloraba a sus muertos que eran velados en los domicilios de sus familiares. Algunos fueron sepultados al día siguiente y otros fallecieron en días sucesivos, mientras que muchos felizmente se recuperaron de sus heridas y quedaron para contarla, permaneciendo como un hecho imborrable en su memoria.
Eva Perón lamentó la tragedia y a través de la Fundación que ella presidía se hizo cargo del sepelio de las víctimas, asistencia a los heridos y ayuda económica, de ser requerida, a los familiares de las víctimas.
La Fundación envío seis ambulancias a Bell Ville con sus respectivos cuerpos de enfermeras, elementos sanitarios, plasma, antibióticos y suero para socorrer a los heridos.
Por su parte, el Gobierno de la Provincia dispuso día de duelo ese 11 de mayo y la asistencia de sus ministros y altos funcionarios para el sepelio de las víctimas.
La Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción fue el escenario de una misa de cuerpo presente, tras lo cual los féretros fueron depositados en los cementerios La Piedad y San Gerónimo. La tragedia del Club Argentino motivó algunos meses después la creación de los Bomberos Voluntarios de Bell Ville, hecho acaecido el 13 de enero de 1953.
